The influence of maternal nutrition on ovine foetal growth.

چکیده
In recent years considerable information on ovine foetal growth has emanated from both medical research, in which the sheep has been used as a convenient experimental animal, and agricultural research, in which the main interest has been in improving the efficiency of the sheep as a meat and wool producer (Alexander, 1974). In the present paper an attempt is made to draw together some of the main findings, in particular those relating to the effects on foetal growth of underand over-nutrition at different stages of gestation. In reviewing the results of experiments made in early and mid pregnancy, nutritional treatments are described as either ‘high‘ or ‘low’, since in many early reports this is the only description of the treatments. In an attempt at more accurate definition, where possible body-weight changes are included in the present review.

Ovine chorionic somatomammotropin and foetal growth.
Ovine chorionic somatomammotropin (oCS) enhances the weight and bone growth of hypophysectomized rats. It acts as a bifunctional hormone, since it binds both to lactogenic and somatotropic receptors. Ovine foetus weight gain is closely related to oCS and oGH serum levels. oCS is able to stimulate somatomedins by foetal liver. Moreover, oCS specific receptors are present in some foetal tissues. ...
متن کاملAssociations of maternal folic acid supplementation and folate concentrations during pregnancy with foetal and child head growth: the Generation R Study
PURPOSE Folic acid supplementation during pregnancy has been associated with a reduced risk of common neurodevelopmental delays in the offspring. However, it is unclear whether low folate status has effects on the developing brain. We evaluated the associations of maternal folic acid supplementation and folate concentrations during pregnancy with repeatedly measured prenatal and postnatal head ...
متن کاملFoetal and placental metabolisms: their interrelationship and impact upon maternal metabolism.
In summary, foetal and placental metabolisms have certain characteristics which appear to bridge species differences. The consumption of carbohydrate and amino acids by the foetal lamb is adequate to meet the energy, C and N requirements of the foetus both for oxidated metabolism and for growth. Techniques to study foetal or maternal metabolism or both under conditions of a biological steady st...
متن کاملMaternal smoking during pregnancy and fetal growth. Effects in preterm infants of gestational age less than 33 weeks.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on foetal growth in preterm infants with gestational age (GA) <33 weeks. POPULATION AND METHODS Prospective observational cross-sectional study from two French perinatal networks cohort of preterm infants. Cases were 358 very preterm infants (GA 24-32 weeks) divided into two groups as maternal smokers (129) and non-smokers...
متن کاملFoetal plasma magnesium levels during maternal hypo- or hypermagnesaemia in ewes.
1. The influence of maternal hypo- or hypermagnesaemia of foetal plasma magnesium levels was studied in pregnant ewes between the 120th and the 145th day of gestation using a permanent catheter inserted in utero into the left aorta of the foetus on the 115th day of gestation. 2. In seven ewes, carrying eleven foetuses, the injection of 1 alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol induced a hypomagnesaemia wh...
